Essential Movies of the 80's

More from here. Here are the 80's, a decade I remember fondly.

Indiana Jones, Raiders or the Lost Ark - A slam dunk of a pic. One of the finest adventure movies ever.
Raging Bull - A very impressive movie...but I wouldn't call it essential. In fact I'd be surprised if I saw this on someone's shelf. It really isn't a take it down and watch it each year type of film.
The Breakfast Club - Maybe the top teenage movie of the decade. A strong choice.
Do The Right Thing - Never saw it but I've heard good stuff.
Batman - Eh. I know it was a big deal back then but it's really faded since.
Glory - A very good film.
Blade Runner - The strongest of the arty sci-fi films. Now it comes in 14 different versions.
Tootsie - One of my faves from the decade.
Sex, Lies and Videotape - Haven't seen it. Never heard this strong of a recommendation for it.
Das Boot - Seriously? This movie lasted for an entire tour of service.

Dead Poet's Society and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Those are the only ones I saw and liked.

My parents took us to see ET and it freaked me out. Super freaked me out. I was scared of the dark for months. What the heck?

2024 Olympics?

Next week the US Olympic Committee will decide if they'll bid on the 2024 Olympics (I'm betting they will) and may decide on which city they'll put forth to host.  There are four cities on the host list: Boston Los Angeles San Francisco Washington DC I've long believed that if the US bids on 2024, they will win.  The US hasn't hosted an Olympics since Salt Lake City in 2002 and no summer games since Atlanta in 1996.  Given the importance that the US has, particularly in funding, a 28 year gap is a huge one. So who gets the nod?  I have absolutely no insider knowledge but I'd like to make some guesses.  Pure speculation to follow. San Francisco is an interesting choice.  The Bay Area is certainly beautiful.  I'm guessing (I haven't checked into it) that there are enough venues in NoCal to satisfy the sporting requirements.  Between the professional teams (six?) and the number of big time colleges, there must be.  Throw in the big mo...

Box Elder Bugs

Yesterday morning's breakfast started badly. I'd split my bagel in half and was ready to toast it when I noticed a BOX ELDER BUG sitting on the toaster. The FP Gal tried to help remove him but it looked like he went into one of the slots. Not cool. She then shook out the toaster over the garbarge while I helpfully supervised from the other side of the kitchen. After that we couldn't see it in the toaster. So...we did a test run to smoke it out. Nothing. After careful inspection I finally toasted my bagel. Carefully checked it for embedded insect. Found it clean and ate it. Whew! This morning I sliced my bagel. And found another Box Elder bug on the toaster. The FP Gal was still asleep so I had to take care of it myself. Kleenex over mouth, eyes barely open and a quick paper towel latter it was gone. Seriously, if I find another one tomorrow we have to sell the house.

Airport Code Game

As you doubtlessly know, airports are known by a unique three letter code. Traditional initials also have three letters. I propose a game. Go here , to an airport code website and enter your initials. Then come back and leave a comment regarding which city you are connected to. The person with the largest city wins! I'll start (and create examples). PGD (me) - Punta Gorda, FL (per Wikipedia the population is 16,762) ARD (Relia) - Alor Island, Indonesia (Wikipedia puts the population at 168,000) FPG (FP Gal) - no known airport (Wikipedia thinks that lots of people don't live at airports but for the purpose of this game she gets a score of 0) So go ahead and give it a try. Leave your answers in the comments. Wikipedia look up available upon request. I honestly have no idea who will win this but I'm curious.
