io9 has been running a series for science fiction newcomers. Today's entry suggests a syllabus for better understanding science fiction writing as a genre. It focuses on six major categories and suggests books that are a good introduction within each. With my recent reading projects (and previous reading) I'd say that they've picked some good stuff.
I'd like to recommend the sections on 'Utopias/Distopias' and 'Science Fiction as Political Philosophy'. They really show the seriousness behind the writing. The genre is easily dismissed as popcorn and fluff but that isn't a fair judgment. Anyone that gives these books a fair reading would see that.
